Wellesley sues state over 40 Oakland Street affordable housing proposal

WELLESLEY — The Select Board and the town filed a complaint in Norfolk County Superior Court on Wednesday challenging a state-backed proposal to develop 40 Oakland Street under the Affordable Homes Act, opening a new legal front in a fight over how affordable housing gets sited on state-owned land. The town also flagged commuter rail changes tied to the 2026 FIFA World Cup that will hit the Framingham/Worcester Line through Wellesley.

TOWN HALL

The Select Board and the Town of Wellesley filed a complaint Wednesday in Norfolk County Superior Court in connection with the proposed development of 40 Oakland Street under the state's Affordable Homes Act. The town's News Flash framed the filing as a formal legal challenge to the proposal, which has been a point of contention between town officials and state housing authorities over how the act applies to land in Wellesley.

Separately, the MBTA announced schedule adjustments on the Framingham/Worcester commuter rail line to accommodate 2026 FIFA World Cup game days. The town is advising Wellesley riders that the changes will affect service through the three Wellesley stations on game days; commuters are urged to check posted schedules before traveling.
